While the latest
trends are fun to keep up on, I’ve always been very interested in
historical fashion. It’s hard to pick a specific time period as a
favorite, though I gravitate to the early to mid 1900′s. Another
fantastic period is that of the 40′s and early 50′s. I was so enthralled
as a child by various musicals and movies from that time period, and a
lot of that was because of the clothing! The late 40′s and early 50′s
gave us some exciting moments in fashion (such as the 1947 New Look by
Dior), truly memorable actresses and fashion icons. Grace Kelly is one
of those, and her wedding gown in 1956 is truly classic. You may
remember that little Royal Wedding a few years ago? Kate Middleton was
the epitome of elegance in her wedding gown - which was remarkably
similar to that of Grace Kelly.
Grace Kelly’s 1956 gown was designed by Helen Rose, costume designer
for MGM. Interesting fact, many assumed Edith Head would be designing
the gown. Edith Head was a very well known costume designer, and had
just designed the gown that Kelly wore when she won the Oscar for best
actress in 1955.
Want a similar look, but a little more
updated? We have this gown from Essence of Australia which also features
a lace top with a more simple bottom, and a pleated waist line. While
not quite as modest as Grace Kelly’s, it does have an elegant timeless
look.
So, check this out. Grace Kelly’s granddaughter, Jazmin Grace Grimald,
is featured in the August 2015 Harper’s Bazaar (which, by the way has
been chronicling fashion since 1867)! She is photographed in some really
striking poses, that harken back to her grandmother’s flawless look. I
was happy to see her in a wedding gown, although it is nothing like
Grace Kelly’s!
Ms.
Grimald is wearing a Vera Wang gown, with black sash to accent the
waist. This is a more modern gown than I thought they might pick, but I
love that her hair is styled very much like Grace Kelly often wore it.
Loving this gown? We have a similar gown from Maggie Sottero - it just
needs a black sash! It also has a fitted silhouette, with layers softly
sculpting the bottom skirt.

You know what’s almost as exciting as Christmas? New gowns arriving!
There’s
nothing quite as much fun as unpacking new designer gowns for the
upcoming season! Want to know what’s trending? Here are just a few key
details we expect to see a lot of in the fall.
1) Soft Colored Hues
Gowns
in blush, peony, champagne, muscato and cafe - you name it - are having
a huge moment, especially with an ivory tulle and/or lace overlay. The
champagne shades certainly are lovely for an autumn wedding. Love the
trend but really want an ivory or white gown? Try a beaded sash in
bisque or rose mist for just a bit of color!
2) Beautiful Backs
Gowns
with interesting and intricate backs gained popularity awhile ago, but
it seems it is here to stay, and there is no shortage of gorgeous
designs to choose from! From key hole backs to tattoo lace and sheer
tulle with streamlined buttons, these gowns make your exit as stunning
as your entrance. Already have your low back gown, but want to add some
detail? Try some “back jewelry” to create a look all your own!
3) Long Sleeves
Ever
since Kate Middleton revealed her wedding gown, designers have been
flirting with long sleeve designs. They may have taken a while to catch
on, but they create a classic timeless look. Love the long sleeve look
but afraid to commit, or already have your perfect strapless gown? Try a
lace bridal jacket, which can be removed for the reception!
